Minneapolisâ € ™ Rich History
Minnesota € ™ s largest city, Minneapolis is located on the Mississippi River and adjacent the State Capitol in St. Paul. The combined city is often referred to Minneapolis-St. Paul metropolitan area forming the 15th largest in the United States. The city of Minneapolis has a long and distinguished history, based on water and mainly influenced by the Falls of St. Anthony.
Before the arrival of the first settlers Europe in 1680, Dakota Sioux had free rein on the land now known as Minneapolis. But for 140 years there has been little development in the region, It was not until the construction of Fort Snelling in 1825 that the region has seen a significant expansion. Under pressure from the relentless influx of settlers, the Sioux have sold their land forge the way for the incorporation of the city of Minneapolis in 1867. Five years later, settlers began arriving from Chicago via the railroad newly built, helping to strengthen the settlementâ € ™ s figures.
The St. Anthony Falls, the natural waterfall on the Mississippi, formed the core of the city. Here mills and factories of wood flour and flowered in 1871, Minnesota boasted many thriving businesses including iron works, other cotton mills and paper mill and a major railroad. Cereals cultivated by farmers on the Great Plains found its way to CITYA € ™ s many plants by rail, and in 1905 the Minneapolis area was responsible for nearly 10% of total flour and grist output of the United States.
Never a city to sit on its laurels, Minneapolis shaved 40% of its buildings comprising 25 blocks in a fervent renovation urban early 1950s to mid 1960s. That the renewal continues and the city is now a modern metropolis with a history rich and home to five Fortune 500 companies.
Known as â € ~ city of lakes € ™ many recreational activities in the region are water-based, with 6% of the total area covered by lakes. It boasts a thriving art and music culture, and one of CITYA ™ € s claims to fame is that rock musician of international renown, the Prince studied at the Dance Theater Minneapolis. Professional sports are well represented in the city with the s ™ € NFLâ Vikings Baseball € ™ s major league Twins, NBAA € ™ s Timberwolves and the WNBA Lynx € ™ s all based there.
Getting around downtown Minneapolis is facilitated by Skyways, which consists of seven miles of walkways connecting the blocks of eighty. Restaurants, retailers and the lobby of an occasional hotel of downtown Minneapolis are all connected through this gateway to the second floor.
